I suspect I know why the SU-76 was chosen in this role (it's probably due to the continuance of the light T-70 chassis production) but I would have preferred the SU-122 instead for this role. The SU-122's gun (even the HE round) could take out a Tiger or Panther better than the 76 mm, plus it offered a much superior round against non-armored targets, which you think would be important.
