From Stalin's point of view Russia was doing 90% of the dying in the fight with the German's. I used to know a WW 2 merchant seaman named Carlos Allende. He sat around dreaming that our ships could be made invisible. Even though he was crazy, I always respected him because he braved the Atlantic at a time our country needed him, and his knowledge of science was actually excellent.
Sager ,William A.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06830369127449299646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-85344249001233355342019-03-24T14:18:10.782-04:002019-03-24T14:18:10.782-04:00Shipping through Iran was also considered much saf...Shipping through Iran was also considered much safer, so tanks primarily sent through that route would have suffered fewer losses as well.Peterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09622237223229485503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-64940061523990515722019-03-24T05:41:18.549-04:002019-03-24T05:41:18.549-04:00Yeah, if nothing else the Lees were sent over back...Yeah, if nothing else the Lees were sent over back when the Battle of the Atlantic was still fairly even and the Allies reinventing much of the old antisubmarine wheel. The balance started RATHER going against the U-boats later...
A good half of the Shermans also only shipped over from mid-'44 onwards by which time the Atlantic was just about an "Allied lake" and convoy losses low.Kellomieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04915110653443066212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-24380516062890548122019-03-24T02:17:59.417-04:002019-03-24T02:17:59.417-04:00Thank you Peter- but I know this data. I know data which suggest that 1385 M3 Lee was send to Soviet Union, and 410 these tanks was lost during shipping. That's mean that around 29% of tanks was lossed during shipping. 4102 Sherman tanks was send to Soviet Union. 29% from this number that's around 1189. That's mean that around 2913 Sherman tanks was received by Soviets. Of course, that's calculation for fun, not real, serious estimation.AKMShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08038804619662765120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-14851673143083087022019-03-23T18:15:56.992-04:002019-03-23T18:15:56.992-04:00I don't think the Soviets ever recorded what a...I don't think the Soviets ever recorded what angle armour components were struck at, just the percentage that hit each individual component.

As for the Shermans, I only have American data on tanks that were sent: 1990 M4A2 and 2095 (some sources say 2073) M4A2(76)W VVSS and HVSS.Peterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09622237223229485503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-73777384055139869392019-03-23T15:02:40.838-04:002019-03-23T15:02:40.838-04:00Did Amizur ever find a IS-2 model 1943 to measure?...Did Amizur ever find a IS-2 model 1943 to measure? (He did these on two S-2 model 1944 samples he found). It would also be interesting to calculate the angle of impact distribution for the IS-2's turret. I've seen this calculation for the Panther's mantlet, there it was calculated that 75 % of any any hits will impact at a vertical angle of more than 30 degrees (only about 10 % will hit at near-normal angles), with c. 45 degrees vertical angle of incidence being near the top of the histogram. This does not take into account any additional horizontal angle that might exist.

It would be interesting if the geometry of the IS-2's rounded front is roughly comparable. People tend to see "100 mm rounded" figures and think "only 100 mm", forgetting that the chance of a near-normal angle of impact is pretty small and the likely angle of impact will offer a significant amount of protection. Propably that's most popular heavy tank ever. I add link to measurements of IS-2 armour. Measurements extremly interesting for me, because based on IS-2 tank which stay in Lębork town. I must add that I have conotations with Lębork. https://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/288445-is-2-front-turret-and-gun-mantlet-armor-measured/

But I have a different question about Red Army- how many Sherman tanks Red Army received? I know information that US send around 4100 Sherman tanks to Soviet Union. But how many tanks Soviets received? Propably some Shermans sank into ocean (some transport ships propably was destroyed by Germans). As example- I found information that from around 1300 M3 medium tanks, around 400 was lost during shipping. That's pretty big percent in my opinion.AKMShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08038804619662765120noreply@blogger.com
