There is always pushback against accepting anything new, but the D-10/BS-3 managed to overcome this hurdle and not only get 100 mm ammo into production, but brand new types of ammo (whereas the 3-K rounds were already developed). I think that if there was a sufficient push from above then the S-54 could definitely have been successful.Peterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09622237223229485503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-18912903571286583112021-11-20T09:30:44.405-05:002021-11-20T09:30:44.405-05:00Oh hey. Finally I got a look at what's under the T-34 1942s turret buldges :DKillaKiwihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04760488116137443661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5030145265861917845.post-58772160160216861582021-11-20T05:10:33.365-05:002021-11-20T05:10:33.365-05:00This was not a grassroots initiative, orders came ... This was not a grassroots initiative, orders came from the top. The reasoning for them was sound. The 3-K had the same penetration as the ZIS-4, but a more powerful HE shell.

....

For some reason no one was concerned about getting ammunition for the 3-K anymore.

....

Unfortunately, the artillery branch dug in its heels once more by the start of December. The reason was the same: they did not want to put 3-K ammunition into circulation once more. The Chief of the GAU Colonel General Yakovlev himself spoke out against the S-54. He considered it an intermediate step at best.

Who's in charge here anyway? :P

What's odd is that this directive "came from the top", and the results were impressive enough to satisfy the ammo concern problems, but then the artillery was use ammo concerns able to fight off the new weapon.

Why not just switchover ALL production of 76 mm guns and ammo to the new S-54 76 mm gun, so there is no ammo mismatch problems anymore? Being able to upgrade both T-34s and KV-1s in the field is a very attractive option, plus there would be a capability upgrade to the army's anti-tank regiments too.

Even with the 85 mm gun on the way, I recall it was still be like mid-1944 before the T-34/85 started to constitute the majority of T-34s in Soviet tank formations. You might have bought a reprieve for many brave Soviet tankers if this gun had come into use, stopgap or no.Stewart Millenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01261690405884935161noreply@blogger.com
