The Sherman tank was superior to any other tank in North Africa when it made its debut in October of 1942, but such supremacy is rarely permanent. Improvement to its firepower in the form of a 76 mm gun was conceived in 1942, but it took until 1944 for mass production of tanks with 76 mm guns to begin.
