Sure, you can make a huge turret to give even a very powerful gun good gun depression and elevation, but there's a trap in making your gun mantlet too small.
As you can see in this excerpt from the trials of the enlarged T29 turret of the M6A2E1 tank, it might be worth sacrificing some gun mobility for added protection.
