Now banned in a whole country!

At 5:32 pm EST today, one of my readers from Russia has informed me that my blog is no longer accessible in the country, due to the following laws:
  • 114-FZ "On counteracting extremist activity"
  • 436-FZ "On protecting children from information harming their health or development"
  • 149-FZ "On information, information technologies, and protecting information"
  • Government Decree #1101 "Single register of domain names, links to pages in the information-telecommunication network "Internet" and network addresses, allowing the identification of sites in the information-telecommunication network "Internet", containing information the distribution of which is forbidden inside of the Russian Federation"
As the overwhelming majority of the content of this website actually comes from Russia in the first place, the irony is palpable. Finally, now I am in the same leagues as famous people like Madonna!

Russia is currently #10 on my list of countries sorted by visitors, with 1753 overall, 544 over the last month, and 120 this week.

Edit: now with screenshot!

It would appear that this did not propagate to all ISPs, as I am getting some traffic from Russia.

  1. Damn. Feel sorry to hear this, your blog is one of best blog for raw information about WWII, especially the vaguely-known (to the majority) Eastern Front.

By the way, do you have any chance of getting your blog un-banned?

  2. Absolutely astonishing! I can't even begin to imagine how the authorities were thinking. Sad to hear it though, a lot of readers will miss out on interesting information.

  3. Obviously some kid is going to get his hands on a hundred tons of steel, make a tank, and end up poking his eye out.

  4. This is obviously a false alarm since I can read your blog just fine. The reader who told you this might have done so in a retarded form of protest against the whole policy of banning violent websites.

Federal database of banned websites (eais.rkn.gov.ru) has no mention of your blog, including tankarchives.blogspot.ru and tankarchives.blogspot.com versions.

    1. Perhaps they removed it? When I checked traffic sources, Russia was absent for some period of time yesterday.

    2. The message that shows up if I try accessing actually banned content is very different, more official and substantial. The screenshot you posted looks like it's some private company fucked up (since it says "абонент").

  7. Ironically, the amount of visitors from Russia went up to ~1900. It's almost beating out the Netherlands for #9 spot!

  8. That is fucking strange. Especially considering that your site is one of rare ones that do not paint the Red Army as bunch of subhumans that won over Wermacht by being crazy, lucky and more numerous.
